30th Anniversary of KAFU: Guest Lecture “Equestrian Empire: Horses and Power in the Kazakh Steppe, 1880-1920s”
On September 26, 2024, as part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the university, a guest lecture entitled “Equestrian Empire: Horses and Power in the Kazakh Steppe, 1880-1920s” was held at the Kazakh-American Free University. The speaker was Sean McDaniel, Professor of History, PhD from the University of the Cumberlands, USA.
The lecture was devoted to the history of Kazakhstan and the role of nomads in the political and social processes of the region during this period. Professor McDaniel made an excursion into the era when horses played a central role in the lives of nomadic peoples and spoke in detail about how power and the structure of society were closely linked to the nomadic economy in the Kazakh steppe. The event was a valuable contribution to understanding the history of Kazakhstan and its rich culture, allowing students and visitors to the university to understand better the historical processes that shaped the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
