Regional Olympiad in English “Striving for Excellence” for students of 9-11 grades of East Kazakhstan schools and 1-2 year college students 

On April 26, 2024, the Kazakh-American Free University hosted a Regional English language Olympiad for 9-11^th graders of East Kazakhstan schools and 1-2^nd year students of colleges  “Striving for Excellence”. This is an annual competition that has been held at KAFU for 17 years. 35 teams (172 participants) took part in the competition, 20 of which were allowed to participate in the 2nd round. 

In the first round, participants took lexical and grammatical test, and in the second they had to express the group’s opinion on a chosen topic and participate with another team in a mini-debate. All participants gained invaluable experience, which will undoubtedly be useful to them in the future.

During the 1st round of the Olympiad, English language teachers from city and East Kazakhstan schools took an active part in a methodological seminar by certified English and mathematics teacher Kathleen Hyde (Portland, USA).

The winners of the Olympiad were:

In the category “General education schools, colleges”:

1st place –“School-center of additional education No. 19” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department of East Kazakhstan region;

2nd place –“School-center of additional education No. 48” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department of East Kazakhstan region;

3rd place – “Ybyray Altynsarin secondary school No. 39” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department of East Kazakhstan region.

In the category “Lyceums, gymnasiums”:

1st place – “School-gymnasium No. 10” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department of East Kazakhstan region;

2nd place – “Lev Gumilyov gymnasium No. 38” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department of East Kazakhstan region;

3rd place – “School-lyceum No. 34” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department of East Kazakhstan region.

The educational grant of the President of KAFU is received by Alisher Azhibaev, a 10th grade student of the “Secondary School No. 42” of the education department for the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, education department  of East Kazakhstan region.
