Meeting with a Professor from Washington State University

On October 4, 2022, students from the educational programs 6B01703 – “Foreign Language: Two Foreign Languages” and 6B02301 – “Translation Studies” at the Kazakhstan-American Free University met with Professor Talant Mokanuly from Washington State University (USA).

Dr. Mokanuly currently serves as the Director of the Center for Turkic and Central Eurasian Studies and teaches in the Departments of Anthropology, Linguistics, and Asian Languages and Literature.

Dr. Mokanuly is a specialist in Turkic and sociocultural linguistics, with his research focused on the languages of Central Eurasia and China within their social and cultural contexts, with a special emphasis on endangered languages.

Professor Mokanuly spoke about his research, the reasons behind his interest in linguistics, and his work at Washington State University. KAFU students had the opportunity to ask questions of interest. In particular, topics such as language learning, multilingualism, and barriers to developing a multilingual identity were discussed.
