A New Generation of Internet Fraud: A Preventive Session for Students with Police Officers

On October 29, 2026, the Kazakh-American Free University hosted an informative session for students enrolled in the “Law” educational program. The event, organized in collaboration with the Police Department of the East Kazakhstan Region as part of the “Law and Order” initiative, focused on the topic: “A New Generation of Internet Fraud: Phishing, Caller ID Spoofing, SIM-boxes, Deepfakes, and the Use of Artificial Intelligence.”

The guest speakers were Captain A. B. Sotsialov, Head of the Cybercrime Investigation Unit at the Oskemen City Police Department, and Captain A. M. Satybaldinov, a Senior Investigator within the same unit.

During the session, the police officers briefed the students on the most prevalent forms of online fraud, contemporary schemes used to deceive citizens, the application of caller ID spoofing and SIM-box technology, as well as “money mule” (dropper) schemes—where individuals are drawn into illicit financial operations.

Special emphasis was placed on digital security, the identification of fraudulent schemes, and measures to prevent cybercrime. To provide a clear understanding of common online fraud tactics, the students were shown illustrative video materials.

The speakers urged the students to remain vigilant when using digital technologies, to never share personal or banking information with third parties, and to inform their family and friends about these modern fraudulent schemes to help prevent such crimes. Holding such events—as part of the university’s cooperation with law enforcement agencies and the implementation of the “Law and Order” concept—contributes to enhancing students’ legal and digital literacy, fostering a culture of information security, and strengthening the principles of legality and law and order.
