Fact-Checking in the Era of Deepfakes and Neurotexts: Challenges for Modern Journalism

On April 10, 2025, a briefing on the topical topic of “Fact-Checking in the Era of Deepfakes and Neurotexts: Challenges for Modern Media” was held at the Kazakh-American Free University as part of the XV International Forum of Young Scientists “Modern Scientific Directions: from Applied Research to Innovations”. The speaker was Yulia V. Chernyavskaya, content editor of the Altainews.kz website and a correspondent for the East Kazakhstan region for the republican Internet resources Tengrinews.kz and Zakon.kz.

The meeting brought together 1st — 3rd year students of the EP “Journalism”, interested in modern trends in the media sphere. Yulia V. Chernyavskaya shared her many years of experience in the editorial office, spoke about the daily practice of a journalist in the context of an ever-changing digital landscape and emphasized the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking skills in the era of information noise. The meeting paid special attention to the modern challenges that journalists face: the spread of deepfakes, automated generation of fake texts using neural networks, the need for prompt but verified information. The speaker gave specific examples of how important it is to be able to distinguish reliable information from manipulation. We thank Yulia V.
