“Tolyk Adam”: KAFU Discussed Values and Principles in Schoolchildren’s Education

On September 28, 2026, Kazakhstan-American Free University hosted a guest lecture titled “The ‘Tolyk Adam’ Concept and Values and Principles in Schoolchildren’s Education” as part of the International Scientific Congress “The Future of Science and Education: International Experience, Innovation and Leadership.”

The speaker was Darya Vasilyevna Shalamova, a practicing educator, Master of Education, and representative of Municipal State Institution “Secondary School No. 14” of the Education Department of Ust-Kamenogorsk.

During the meeting, participants explored the “Tolyk Adam” concept as a foundation for developing a harmonious, moral, and responsible individual. Particular attention was paid to Abai’s philosophical legacy and the unity of reason, will, and heart — “aqyl, qayrat, zhurek.”

Darya Shalamova emphasized that educating schoolchildren is not limited to class meetings and individual activities. It takes place every day — during lessons, communication, conflict resolution, joint projects, and independent decision-making.

Using practical examples, participants discussed ways to develop students’ sense of responsibility, independence, critical thinking, emotional culture, and ability to cooperate. Effective educational practices highlighted during the lecture included student self-government, project-based and volunteer activities, mentoring, collaborative rule-making, and regular reflection.

The main message of the lecture was that the effectiveness of educational work is determined not by the number of activities held, but by real changes in a child’s behavior and worldview. A school should become an environment where students not only acquire knowledge but also learn to respect others, take responsibility for their actions, acknowledge their mistakes, and continuously develop.
